I was talking to a new client, who owns a small boutique, on Thursday. And I realized that she, like many others, have a HUGE and CRITICAL problem that's preventing her from making a truck load of money.
I sat with her for almost an hour and observed the proceedings.
A young lady came in and requested a black top in 'Extra Large'.
Then a French middle-aged lady and her female companion (I believe it was her daughter) came in and purchased a dress.
Then an older woman entered and browsed a bit...
This went on for a while and she explained to me that when she buys small sizes, women come in and request larger sizes and she's been meaning to buy sizes 12 and up but sometimes people want smaller sizes.
I said to her. "You know what? I think you need to choose a target market, a specific target market that you can focus on."
I gave her this exercise to do and I recommend that you do this as well, if you're stuck.
For the next week, everyone that purchases your service or buys your products, put them in a category.
Your categories could be:
Age, size, sex, profession, income level, net worth, occupation, etc.
After you do this, create a simple spreadsheet and see which category comes out ahead.
For example, if after your testing you find that you offer your service mainly to doctors or mainly to graphic designers; or size 0-4's or plus size women, then you have a target market!
Simple, huh?
Why are we making it complicated?
Once you narrow down your target market, you can speak to them directly and offer your services. It'll be less expensive for you and therefore more profitable.
It may be that my client may end up with a target market of: professional women who wear size 12+ and who prefer nice flowery dresses instead of pants and skirts.
You see how this could make her more money?
This is an important process to Branding Yourself!
All she has to do is focus on what her customers want! Let's not confuse the customers.
